Moms today are too anxious, and fueling their anxieties with pumpkin spice lattes and double Americanos.
See, in my mom’s day, she didn’t supervise me at all. She put ‘Martini & Rossi’ in her coffee cup and thumbed through the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar.
Sometimes kids just need autonomy. They need to figure it out on their own. They need some unsupervised “kid time” to navigate friendships and hardships.
Yes, adults need to step in and guide. Even in my day, moms would run across the playground to break up a fight, and drag their kid off by the ear.
But, they didn’t hover. They let us take some isolated steps.
My mom probably was a little less involved than most, and sometimes she wasn’t even there. But, for the most part, she stayed out of the way, and let me learn lessons on my own.
We could learn a lot from my mom.
