In June, at the end of the school year, I’m permanently deleting my Facebook account. They are not a social media site, they are a media manipulation site.

[UPDATE: I left Facebook in January 2021 because of the vitriol. I just couldn’t wait until June.]

I’ve already left Twitter, but I have to wait to leave Facebook until I no longer need the “parents of” groups, many of which often offer better information on school activities than the weekly email blasts.

I’m leaving Facebook and Twitter for three core reasons:

  1. Their mismanagement of private information.
  2. Their overt engineering of news.
  3. Their obvious suppression of free speech.

Last night, we watched “The Social Dilemma” and after seeing that movie, I’m not willing to spend much time on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media site.

I’ll miss the “likes,” the challenges, the interactions, the friendship, the camaraderie and the laughs (oh, those memes!); it’s been amazing 12 years!

But on a better note, I’ve contacted many of my close friends to give them my personal contact information, and I’ve already set up a lunch date with an old buddy. Can hardly wait to see her!

Nothing beats a face-to-face repartee.
